Statistics on Sarcoma in Children
Sarcomas are rare diseases but represent a meaningful proportion of childhood cancer diagnoses. According to international cancer registries, sarcomas account for approximately 10–15% of all malignant tumors in children and adolescents.
Every year thousands of new pediatric sarcoma cases are diagnosed worldwide. Osteosarcoma occurs in approximately 3–5 children per million each year, while Ewing sarcoma occurs in about 2–3 cases per million children annually. Rhabdomyosarcoma is the most common soft tissue sarcoma in childhood and accounts for roughly 4–5% of all pediatric cancers.
Advances in oncology over the past decades have significantly improved outcomes. For localized sarcoma, the five-year survival rate may reach 60–80%, depending on the type of sarcoma, stage of the disease and response to treatment.
Symptoms of Sarcoma in Children
The symptoms of sarcoma vary depending on the location of the tumor, but they often develop gradually. One of the most common signs is persistent pain in a bone or muscle. The pain may initially be mistaken for a sports injury or normal growth-related discomfort, but it tends to worsen over time and may become more noticeable at night.
As the tumor grows, swelling or a lump may appear in the affected area. Parents sometimes notice this change when a firm mass becomes visible or can be felt under the skin. If the tumor develops near a joint, the child may experience limited movement or begin to limp.
In some cases children may also experience more general symptoms such as fatigue, decreased appetite or unexplained weight loss. These symptoms are not specific to cancer, but when they persist or worsen over time they should be evaluated by a medical professional.
Osteosarcoma in Children
Osteosarcoma is the most common bone sarcoma in children and adolescents. It develops from cells that normally produce bone tissue. The tumor most often occurs in the long bones, particularly around the knee, in the lower part of the femur or the upper part of the tibia.
The disease is typically diagnosed during adolescence, a period when bones grow rapidly. The most frequent symptoms include persistent bone pain, swelling around the affected area and sometimes fractures occurring with minimal trauma.
Treatment for osteosarcoma usually involves a combination of chemotherapy and surgical removal of the tumor. Advances in surgical techniques now allow limb-preserving procedures in many cases, which can help maintain normal function and quality of life.
How Sarcoma in Children Is Diagnosed
Diagnosing sarcoma requires a careful and systematic medical evaluation. The process usually begins with a clinical examination followed by imaging tests such as X-rays, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or computed tomography (CT scans).
The most important step in confirming the diagnosis is a biopsy. During this procedure a small sample of the tumor tissue is removed and examined under a microscope by a pathologist. The biopsy allows doctors to determine the exact type of sarcoma and to plan the most appropriate treatment strategy.
Treatment of Sarcoma in Children
Treatment of pediatric sarcomas is typically provided in specialized oncology centers and involves a multidisciplinary team including pediatric oncologists, surgeons and radiation specialists.
Surgery remains the primary treatment method for removing the tumor. Chemotherapy is often used before surgery to shrink the tumor or after surgery to reduce the risk of recurrence. Radiation therapy may also be used in certain types of sarcoma, particularly in Ewing sarcoma and rhabdomyosarcoma.
Ongoing research continues to develop new therapeutic approaches, including targeted therapies and immunotherapy. These treatments aim to attack cancer cells more precisely and offer hope for improved outcomes in the future.

Early detection is one of the most important factors influencing treatment success in pediatric sarcoma. Persistent bone pain, unusual swelling or changes in a child’s movement should not be ignored.
